Cardiff Airport is proceeding with a major Runway Rehabilitation Project, marking its first substantial airfield upgrade since the resurfacing undertaken in 2003/2004. This strategic investment is designed to elevate safety, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the resilience of the airport’s infrastructure, ensuring full alignment with contemporary aviation and regulatory standards.
The comprehensive works include the resurfacing of the main runway, the replacement of legacy lighting infrastructure, and the installation of new, modern airfield electrical cabling. In addition, new paved surfaces are being developed adjacent to the runway and taxiways. These enhancements aim to support better aircraft maneuverability and accommodate future growth in air traffic and aircraft size.
Leading the airfield ground lighting (AGL) works is UK-based specialist atg airports, which brings deep industry knowledge and a proven track record in airfield lighting solutions. As part of its scope, atg airports is replacing outdated halogen fittings with its advanced FX range of LED fixtures, manufactured at its Warrington headquarters. The FX range is specifically engineered to deliver exceptional energy efficiency, low maintenance, and long service life — critical factors in reducing the airport’s long-term operational costs and environmental impact.
Key elements of the atg airports package include:
- LED Lighting Upgrade: Deployment of the FX range of high-performance LED lighting across runway and taxiway systems, providing superior visibility and reduced energy use.
- Electrical Cabling Installation: Full replacement of primary and secondary cabling to support the new lighting systems and improve operational resilience.
- System Integration: Seamless integration of the upgraded lighting into Cardiff Airport’s existing control and monitoring systems, enhancing operational control and flexibility.
Ian Bate, Turnkey Director at atg airports, commented, “We’re proud to support Cardiff Airport with this forward-thinking rehabilitation project. The FX range of fixtures provides a future-ready, sustainable solution that aligns with today’s operational and environmental standards.”
This project reinforces Cardiff Airport’s dedication to modernising its infrastructure and showcases atg airports’ position as a leading provider of intelligent, sustainable AGL solutions.
