Runway Lighting Circuit Replacement at Newcastle Airport
ATG airports recently completed a significant infrastructure upgrade at Newcastle International Airport, centred on the full replacement of runway and taxiway lighting and associated circuit transformers and secondary cabling, along with replacement Taxiway guidance signage. This essential project was undertaken to modernise the airport’s lighting systems and improve long-term operational efficiency and reliability.
The project was entrusted to atg airports’ in-house Airfield Ground Lighting Installation team, whose technical expertise and project management skills were instrumental in delivering results within a challenging timeframe. Working exclusively during night shifts, the team was able to carry out the work with minimal impact on the airport’s day-to-day operations. This approach not only maximised productivity but also ensured the project could proceed uninterrupted in a live airfield environment.
The primary goal was to enhance the dependability of the runway lighting system, a critical component of any airport’s operational framework.
To achieve this, the atg airports team undertook a complete overhaul of the existing circuits. This involved precision planning, and close coordination with the airport’s engineering and operations teams.Over a series of night shifts, the AGL specialists systematically removed outdated equipment and wiring and installed new secondary cabling throughout the runway lighting system. Each circuit was carefully rewired, calibrated, and tested to ensure optimal performance and full compliance with regulatory standards. The complexity of the work required not only technical knowledge but also flexibility and precision, especially given the need to work within restricted operational windows.
In addition to the extensive rewiring, the project also included the installation of new constant current regulators (CCR’s) and electrical supply upgrades. These modern CCR’s deliver improved energy management and ensure consistent performance across the lighting network, regardless of changes in load or environmental conditions. The installation of this technology will contribute to reduced operational costs and improved system longevity. The scope of work further encompassed an upgrade to the airport’s airfield ground lighting control and monitoring system.
