ATG Airports Secures Airfield Ground Lighting Control System Upgrade at Cardiff International Airport
ATG Airports is supporting the modernisation of critical airfield infrastructure at Cardiff International Airport with an upgrade to its Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) Control System, delivering enhanced reliability, resilience and operational efficiency. The project will see ATG Airports design, manufacture and implement upgraded control equipment, communications infrastructure and operator workstations, helping Cardiff International Airport maintain safe and efficient airfield operations while introducing modern technology.
Modernising the AGL Control Infrastructure
A key element of the project involves replacing the existing A Centre Control Panel with a modern, flexible solution designed to support both existing and future operational requirements. The new panel will maintain control of the airport’s existing Constant Current Regulators (CCRs) while enabling a managed transition from traditional digital communications to Ethernet-based control. This approach will ensure operational continuity throughout the upgrade process, minimising disruption while providing a platform for future system development.
Enhancing Communications and System Resilience
The project also includes replacing the existing Void Interface Panel and introducing modern PROFINET industrial Ethernet communications between the B Centre Control Panel and Air Traffic Control Tower workstations. To further strengthen system resilience, the upgraded infrastructure will incorporate dual redundant DC power supplies and battery backup, maintaining essential control equipment for at least one hour in the event of a mains power failure.
Upgraded Tower and Maintenance Workstations
ATG Airports will also supply two new operator workstations for the VCR, featuring industrial-grade computers, modern displays and Siemens SCADA software. A dedicated maintenance SCADA workstation will provide improved system monitoring and maintenance capabilities, supporting efficient management of the airport’s AGL infrastructure.
Supporting Cardiff International Airport’s Future
This latest project demonstrates ATG Airports’ continued commitment to supporting UK airports through innovative, reliable and future-ready airfield lighting solutions. By combining modern control technology, resilient communications and practical engineering expertise, ATG Airports is helping Cardiff International Airport strengthen its operational infrastructure while extending the service life of existing equipment.
The project further reinforces ATG Airports’ position as a trusted specialist in the design, manufacture, installation and modernisation of Airfield Ground Lighting systems.
